Cathy Stapling Bench Upholstery

Before taking Carla’s workshop, I felt uncertain of my ability to do a good job on a big cushion seat project. During the class, I was able to create a piece I am proud of! I came away with a professional looking (by me!) booth seat for my vintage camper. I feel empowered, confident and anxious to complete the next seat so I can enjoy entertaining in style in my ‘new’ camper.

We all have a story about our furniture. What’s yours?

Whether your particular chair means the world to you or you’re just looking for a way to not throw it away here’s your chance to give that piece of your life a new story.

Dining chairs looking a little rough around the edges. An old favorite arm chair in need of repair sent to the attic until you can get around to it. The most awesome retro-vintage piece that just needs a new cushion. A very special, but sadly broken-down family heirloom that has been calling to be returned to its place of honor in your family’s life.

I reside in Louisville, KY. and I’m interested in possible taking online classes to learn furniture upholstery. Is that possible?

  2. Carla PyleCarla Pyle05-04-2015

    Hi Angela,

I currently have one online class to build a boxed & corded cushion for a chair, sofa, window seat or yoga cushion. For 2016, I’m converting this course to be self-paced.

You can learn more at http://www.bodaciousboxcushions.com/ This is a comprehensive course that plays with some fun design exercises to help you choose fabrics as well as providing detailed videos of measuring, cutting and sewing all the parts of a zippered box cushion (including the foam core).

We also cover alternative materials in the class if you’re thinking of using natural & organic materials in your cushion.

    Thanks for a great question!

I have a recliner that needs to be reupholstered…any suggestions on that type of class? Thanks

  4. Carla PyleCarla Pyle11-04-2016

    Hi Patricia,

A recliner would be advanced upholstery project. Unless you have extensive upholstery experience, I recommend taking a beginner level class before taking on anything with upholstered arms. Recliners may require specialized tools to disassemble and reassemble due to the springs and levers associated with the reclining mechanism.

    Thanks for a great question,
